Local essay competition celebrates World Habitat Day and World Cities Day


Macao, China: The world is becoming increasingly urbanized. While the world enjoys economic growth, it also faces challenges such as overburdened infrastructure, worsening air pollution, and a lack of affordable housing. Since 2014, UN Habitat has organized Urban October, a month-long initiative that highlights the challenges and solutions relating to cities, towns, and communities.

In celebration of World Habitat Day and World Cities Day, Macau Speech Professionals Association will host the Macao-wide English Essay Competition from September to December 2021. Through this competition, students will learn about the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals and reflect on the theme: “The Change I Want to Make.”

About Urban October, World Habitat Day, and World Cities Day

Organized by UN Habitat, Urban October marks a month of events focused on urban issues and sustainable development. This year, it begins with World Habitat Day on October 4 under the 2021 theme, Accelerating urban action for a carbon-free world, and will end with World Cities Day on October 31 with the theme: Adapting Cities for Climate Resilience.
