The Macau Speech Professionals Association will host a Macao-wide English Essay Competition from September to December 2021, with a focus on the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
The event will invite students from local universities, secondary and elementary schools, who will submit their essays concerning the topic on hand.
“Through this event, we to provide more opportunities for different stakeholders of the society to learn about United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and facilitate a conversation about our own power to make an impact in shaping a better future,” the Executive Vice President of Macau Speech Professionals Association and Macao-wide English Essay Competition Chair, Sandy Leong, told Macau News Agency.
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that by 2030 all people enjoy peace and prosperity.
The Macao Speech Professionals Association includes local professional speakers and public speaking enthusiasts, from national public speaking coaches and trainers to large-scale public speaking event organizers and judges.
“The Macao-wide English Essay Competition began with a simple question our committee asked ourselves: what is one thing we can do to make a positive impact, no matter how small, in my community? And this is the same question we are challenging the young people of Macau to think about while sharing their vision of a better future,” Sandy indicated.
The event will also coincide with the World Habitat Day and World Cities Day celebrations. Organized by UN Habitat, Urban October marks a month of events focused on urban issues and sustainable development.
This year, it begins with World Habitat Day on October 4 under the 2021 theme, Accelerating urban action for a carbon-free world, and will end with World Cities Day on October 31 with the theme: Adapting Cities for Climate Resilience.
